The NFL announced in March that it would be the first major sports league to implement a full-scale simulation of its games, using blockchain technology. How this will impact the future of football is yet to be seen, but experts believe it will revolutionize how we watch and play.
The nfl season simulator 2021-22 is a simulated NFL game that allows users to simulate the 2021 NFL season.
To create our projections for the 2021 NFL season, ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) simulated the entire 285-game schedule 20,000 times. With such a large sample size, we can make the most accurate projections possible, which is, of course, what we want the majority of the time. However, we’ll only be looking at one of them today: Simulation No. 13,330.
Those 20,000 simulations, which use expected starting quarterbacks, past performance, returning starters, and projected win totals to generate a strength rating for each team in the preseason, give us a good idea of what we expect to happen, but nothing ever goes according to plan. Every year, there are surprises, and any team may win on any particular Sunday. So we’re leaving our predictions’ safe harbor and looking at only one of the scenarios.
We went through every game of that simulation to come up with one probable scenario for the 2021 season. This includes predicted victors and losers for each regular-season game, possible division-race stories, surprise contenders, and a look at how the 13 playoff games could unfold. From it all, we get a Super Bowl LVI champion to break the drought, as well as a top-five draft order for 2022 that includes a surprise.
Will everything go as planned? It’s possible. But, then again, this is just one simulation. We used some artistic license to put the findings in perspective, including possible breakthrough players, quarterback disputes, and more. Let’s get started with 12 key takeaways from the event.

The Jaguars’ strong start has resulted in… a playoff berth?!?
Trevor Lawrence, a rookie quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars, began his NFL career in the same manner he began his collegiate career: by winning. Coach Urban Meyer’s squad took advantage of a favorable schedule to open the season, defeating Houston, Denver, and Arizona before losing to the Bengals. Then it bounced back with the group’s greatest win, a 31-14 triumph against Tennessee. No matter who the opponents are, a 4-1 start is nothing to scoff at.
Records up to Week 5
|5-0||Colts vs. Chiefs|
|4-1||Jaguars vs. Browns||San Francisco 49ers, Carolina Panthers, Los Angeles Rams, and Washington Redskins|
|3-2||Titans, Bills, Dolphins, Steelers||Buccaneers, Cowboys, Falcons, Packers, and Vikings are some of the most popular teams in the NFL.|
|2-3||Chargers, Jets, Patriots, Raiders, and Ravens are among the NFL’s best teams.||Lions|
|1-4||Bengals, Broncos, and Texans are all NFL teams.||Bears, The Cardinals and the Giants are both in the NFL., and Saints are among of the NFL’s most popular teams.|
|0-5||Seahawks against. Eagles|
And, despite the fact that the Jaguars cooled down following their hot start (they went 3-5 in their next eight games), their early-season effort paid off. Lawrence’s strong first season was aided by an instant connection with receiver Laviska Shenault Jr., who had 90 catches and helped the Jaguars to a 9-8 record and an AFC wild-card spot.
The tale of the Jaguars didn’t stop there: they went on to win a playoff game as well. More on that later, but the Lawrence-Meyer combo is off to a good start in Jacksonville.
Is it a mistake for the Chicago Bears to open the season with Andy Dalton as quarterback? They certainly did in Simulation No. 13,330.
Chicago struggled to start the season, going 1-3 before benching Dalton and replacing him with Fields. Initially, it didn’t seem that the change had made much of an impact. Fields struggled in his first game against the Raiders, then had a terrible back-to-back against the Packers and Buccaneers, taking a combined 11 sacks and leading the offense to just 10 total points in both defeats. With a 1-6 record, Chicago supporters started to look forward to 2022. Then came the version of Fields that Ohio State supporters have been enjoying for the last several years, and the breezes at Soldier Field changed.
Ryan Clark discusses why Justin Fields, the No. 11 overall selection in the 2021 draft, has what it takes to be the best player in the class.
The first was a thrilling victory against the 49ers at home. The Steelers were then defeated on the road at Heinz Field. Following that, a win against Lamar Jackson and the Ravens was followed by a win over the Lions. The Bears weren’t finished yet.
The 7-9 Bears traveled to Minneapolis in Week 18 to face the 8-8 Vikings, with both teams still in contention for a wild-card berth. The Bears triumphed 20-16, completing an amazing season turnaround that included a playoff berth despite a sub-.500 record, thanks to receiver Darnell Mooney (two touchdowns) and safety Eddie Jackson (one interception off Vikings QB Kirk Cousins). A playoff berth, on the other hand, is a playoff spot.
The Seahawks are in disarray.
Pete Carroll and Shane Waldron, the new offensive coordinator, tried everything. “Let Russ cook,” they said. They attempted to run with the ball. They experimented with everything in the middle. It didn’t make a difference. The Seattle Seahawks were unable to recreate the magic of their early 2020 offense, while their defense was betrayed by a shaky pass rush and a weak secondary.
In this simulation, Seattle began the season with a defeat, followed by another, and then another. By mid-season, the club was the league’s surprise, with an 0-8 record. Six of the defeats were by a single touchdown, but the Seahawks were thrashed by the Steelers in Week 6 by a 29-point margin. No other team was winless as the season neared its halfway point.
Records up to Week 9
|7-2||Chiefs against. Browns||Rams|
|6-2||Jaguars||Washington Redskins, 49ers|
|5-3||Steelers against. Bills||Falcons vs. Buccaneers|
|4-4||Raiders||Cowboys, Lions, Saints, and Vikings are among of the NFL’s most popular teams.|
|3-5||Ravens, Jets, and Chargers|
|3-6||Titans||Giants and Bears|
|2-7||Bengals, Broncos, and Texans are all NFL teams.||Eagles against. Cardinals|
Seattle dropped to 0-9 in Week 10, guaranteeing a losing season for the first time since 2011, until eventually winning 26-20 against Arizona in Week 11. The ball began to bounce the Seahawks’ way down the stretch, as Seattle finished the season with a 5-12 record. But it wasn’t enough to keep the coaching staff and the roster together.
The Panthers get the first overall selection.
Early in the season, it seemed like the Sam Darnold experiment would succeed, and that offensive coordinator Joe Brady would correct the mess that Adam Gase (Darnold’s previous coach in New York) had created. The Panthers started the season with a 4-1 record, defeating Darnold’s former Jets in Week 1 and then went on to win games against the Saints, Texans, and Eagles (with a loss to the Cowboys). However, those opponents were not very difficult, and the 4-1 record was just an illusion.
Coach Matt Rhule’s squad would only win one more game the rest of the way (against the Falcons), finishing the season at 5-12 and tied for the NFL’s lowest record with five other teams. Carolina needed to lose in its last week to win the strength-of-schedule tiebreaker and get the No. 1 overall selection, which it accomplished with a 33-7 loss to the Buccaneers.
Darnold is under contract with the Panthers until the 2022 season, but if things go as planned, the Panthers will be looking at Spencer Rattler, Sam Howell, and the rest of the 2022 class’ best quarterbacks in April.
The remainder of the top five teams, all of which ended with a record of 5-12, are listed below:
New York Giants, No. 2 3. Jets of New York (via Seattle Seahawks) New York Jets, No. 4 Houston Texans, No. 5
Baltimore had a bad season.
The league did, in fact, figure out quarterback Lamar Jackson. Jackson was found out while he was without any receiving weapons and his starting running back, J.K. Dobbins. The preseason injury problems that plagued the Baltimore Ravens’ receiving corps carried over into the regular season, as the club struggled to a 2-5 start and couldn’t recover in time to salvage the season.
With a 7-10 record, GM Eric DeCosta will approach the 2022 offseason with the same goal as the last one: to add additional receiving weapons to Jackson’s arsenal while keeping them healthy.
Jameis Winston’s incredible final stretch propels the Saints into the playoffs.
The New Orleans Saints were 5-6 and in third place in the NFC South after 12 weeks of play. Some fans questioned whether coach Sean Payton should swap to Taysom Hill for the stretch run, and there were rumblings of quarterback turmoil. At the time, only eight NFC clubs had a better record than New Orleans.
Records up to Week 12
|8-3||Bills||San Francisco 49ers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Los Angeles Rams, and Washington Redskins|
|6-5||Steelers, Jaguars, and Chargers||Vikings against. Cowboys|
|5-6||Ravens||Saints, Lions, and Bears|
|4-7||Raiders vs. Jets|
|4-8||Panthers vs. Eagles|
|3-8||Bengals, Broncos, and Texans are all NFL teams.||Cardinals, Giants|
Payton, on the other hand, stayed with Winston and it paid off. Winston’s interceptions, which plagued him in Tampa Bay and in the first half of the season, faded away (though they never really vanished, let’s be honest), and Winston’s downfield passing to a healthy Michael Thomas lit up the New Orleans attack. What’s the end result? A six-game winning run to end the season, including a thrilling 48-37 triumph in Tampa Bay against Tom Brady and the Buccaneers. With an 11-6 record in their first season after Drew Brees’ retirement, the Saints would reach the playoffs.
The Buccaneers won the division, but the Saints entered the wild-card round as a road favorite and defeated the Cowboys in their first meeting.
The Cowboys win the NFC East with a late surge.
Washington looked to be on track to win the NFC East until Week 13. The Dallas Cowboys struggled to a 6-6 start, while Washington jumped out to an 8-4 lead.
Dallas reversed the tide in Week 14 with a 27-20 victory over Washington in Landover, followed by a 17-10 triumph over the Giants in East Rutherford a week later. The Cowboys returned home and defeated Washington for the second time in three weeks, 38-10, before completing the four-game winning run with a 27-24 victory against the Cardinals, securing the division title. Washington, on the other hand, finished the year with six consecutive defeats.
However, as previously stated, Dallas’ comeback and playoff participation did not result in postseason success, as the Cowboys were defeated 24-16 at home by the Saints.
Between Mike McCarthy and Dak Prescott, Marcus Spears and Sam Acho discuss who is under greater pressure this year.
The Colts had a strong regular season but struggle in the playoffs.
Is Carson Wentz’s comeback a success? Yes, that did happen. Then there’s more. Wentz and Frank Reich, the eventual Coach of the Year, were hard at work as if it were 2017. The Indianapolis Colts won their first six games and nine of their first ten games overall.
But it wasn’t only Wentz who shone; the defense did as well for the most of the season. Indy limited five opponents to single digit points: the Titans, Ravens, Jets, Jaguars, and Raiders. Defensive lineman DeForest Buckner, who had a career-high 14 sacks, was a driving force for the team. During the regular season, Indy’s defense allowed only 17.3 points per game, which was the best in the NFL and slightly better than the Buccaneers, Browns, and Rams. The Colts went on to win the AFC South with a 13-4 record.
Here’s a brief rundown of how the final regular-season rankings for all 32 clubs turned out:
|seed for conf.||AFC||NFC|

Indy, on the other hand, was in for a surprise in the playoffs. The Colts matched for the best record in the NFL but missed out on the No. 1 overall seed due to a tiebreaker, which means they’ll face division foe Jacksonville in the wild-card round as a double-digit favorite. In Week 10, the Colts had previously shut out the Jaguars. Trevor Lawrence, on the other hand, offered Indianapolis a glimpse of what the future may hold by defeating the Colts 23-17. (The Jaguars would lose 31-14 to the Bills the next week.)
Trey Lance propels the 49ers to the divisional round.
Jimmy Garoppolo held on to his starting quarterback position for longer than you would think, thanks to the San Francisco 49ers’ strong performance throughout the season. That is, until a three-game losing skid from Weeks 12 to 14 against the Vikings, Seahawks, and Bengals. Coach Kyle Shanahan opted to make a move after San Francisco scored only 14 points in each of the last two games.
He went full-time with Lance, and the decision paid off right away. The 49ers completed the season with four consecutive victories, finishing 12-5 and comfortably winning the NFC West division, which turned out to be less competitive than most predicted in the preseason. During the regular season, the Niners scored 27.7 points per game, second only to the Bills’ average (30.9).
Lance defeated Justin Fields, another draft classmate, 20-17 in the wild-card round. The 49ers, on the other hand, faced a juggernaut in Green Bay, the NFC North champions. Aaron Jones, the Green Bay Packers’ running back, grabbed two touchdown passes in the team’s 28-23 victory.
In the playoffs, the Browns outperform the Chiefs.
The Cleveland Browns delivered on their promise. They didn’t make it all the way, but they had a great season and delivered a knockout blow to football’s best team. Cleveland took advantage of a weak start to the season, winning six consecutive games against the Texans, Bears, Vikings, Chargers, Cardinals, and Broncos between Weeks 2 and 7. The Browns were 12-5, with quarterback Baker Mayfield enjoying his finest season as a pro, ranking sixth in QBR. In addition, a resurgent Odell Beckham Jr. led the club in receiving yards.

The rebuilt defense won the surprise 20-12 win over the Chiefs in the divisional round and stamped the Browns’ ticket to the AFC Championship Game. It was that Mayfield-OBJ connection that powered a 35-30 barn-burner victory over the Steelers in the wild-card round. Patrick Mahomes was intercepted by cornerback Greedy Williams, and edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney caused a critical fumble. For what it’s worth, Kansas City finished 11-6 and won the AFC West, exactly like we all anticipated.
The Browns’ tale eventually came to an end in loss. When the Browns faced the AFC’s top-seeded Bills, the offense couldn’t keep up with Josh Allen, and Mayfield threw two interceptions in a 27-13 defeat. For the first time since 1993, Buffalo was headed to the Super Bowl.
Green Bay defeats the reigning champions.
Aaron Rodgers’ 2020 MVP campaign was not expected to result in another great season, but it did. The Packers finished 11-6 and faced Tom Brady in the NFC Championship Game, just as they did last year. Only this time, Rodgers defeated Brady and the Buccaneers, who were rated first in the NFC.
Rodgers tossed four touchdown passes in Green Bay’s 39-26 win against the Buccaneers at Tampa Bay, two to receiver Davante Adams and two to tight end Robert Tonyan. Rodgers is back in the Super Bowl, with a chance to capture his second ring. Here’s a brief rundown of what happened in the first three rounds of the playoffs:
No. 7 Jaguars beat No. 2 Colts 23-17 in the wild-card round; No. 3 Browns defeat No. 6 Steelers 35-30 in the wild-card round (AFC) The Chiefs beat the Dolphins, 27-24. (NFC) The No. 2 49ers win 20-17 against the No. 7 Bears (NFC) The No. 3 Packers beat the No. 6 Rams 33-31 in the NFC, while the No. 5 Saints beat the No. 4 Cowboys 26-14.
No. 1 Bills beat No. 7 Jaguars 31-14 in the AFC divisional round; No. 3 Browns defeat No. 4 Chiefs 20-12 in the AFC divisional game (NFC) The Buccaneers beat the Saints, 28-24. (NFC) The third-place Packers beat the second-place 49ers 28-23.
No. 1 Bills beat No. 3 Browns, 27-13, in the AFC; No. 3 Packers upset No. 1 Buccaneers, 39-26, in the NFC.

The Bills come out on top. LVI Super Bowl
They were successful! The Buffalo Bills won their first Super Bowl, completing a remarkable season in which they seemed to be legitimate contenders from start to finish. Buffalo went 13-4 during the regular season, and QB Josh Allen won the league MVP award over Patrick Mahomes.
Buffalo lost a wild 45-42 game to the Patriots in Week 13 (Patriots QB Mac Jones has a bright future!) and then went on to win every game after that. Allen scored a touchdown to receiver Stefon Diggs in the Super Bowl, while running back Devin Singletary added two more touchdowns. With four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, cornerback Tre’Davious White jumped an interception to clinch the victory. The final score was 27-17.
But what is the most crucial statistic of all? Even in the middle of winter in Western New York, supporters came to the Orchard Park parking lot the night of the triumph, selling out of every folding table in stock.
Will the Bills be able to win the Super Bowl in real life? We can’t promise that, however. They have a 9.4 percent probability of winning the Lombardi Trophy, according to our 20,000 FPI simulations, which puts them third in the NFL after the Chiefs (19.2 percent) and Buccaneers (14.1 percent ). Buffalo, on the other hand, will always have Simulation No. 13,330.
