Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says his team lacks a goalscoring “weapon” in the pattern of Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku this season.

Sergio Aguero, City’s all-time leading goalscorer, joined Barcelona on a free transfer in the summer, and many high-profile attackers, including Erling Haaland, Robert Lewandowski, and Harry Kane, were linked as potential replacements.

As the transfer deadline neared, Kane seemed to be on the brink of joining Manchester City, but Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy dug his heels in and the England captain was forced to remain put in north London.

Though the Premier League winners went on to break the British transfer record by signing Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish, there are still doubts about whether they have the firepower up front to have a successful domestic and European season.

‘Strikers, strikers, strikers, strikers, strikers, strikers, They live a little outside the team bubble and for themselves, but these are the hardest players to replace,’ Guardiola said before of City’s trip to Stamford Bridge.

‘We had the pleasure of having Sergio for a long time. Unfortunately, he’s been out with injuries for the last year and a half, so we haven’t been able to utilize him much. In terms of how we played, we managed to cope without him in a positive manner.

‘Right now, we have two options: complain or claim that we have great players.’

‘We don’t have the weapon that Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, or other clubs have, so we have to rely on what we can accomplish as a team.’

‘We don’t have a single player capable of scoring 25 league goals, so we’ll have to accomplish it as a group. This is the approach we’ll use this season.’

Lukaku has made an immediate impact since returning to Chelsea, scoring four goals in his first six games, and the Belgian will be looking to add to his total against the champions this weekend.

Lukaku elevated his game to a new level during his two-year stint with Inter Milan, according to Guardiola, who expects the huge centre-forward to play a vital part this season.

Guardiola said, ‘I’m not going to deny what a player Romelu Lukaku is.’

‘He was in the Premier League; he made his first stride at Chelsea, and then, particularly at Everton under Ronald Koeman, he took a step ahead, and then he moved to United.’

‘At Inter Milan, he went a step further. Antonio Conte has the capacity to develop every single player with whom he works, and he has returned to the European champions. The team was already formidable before he arrived, and it is much more so today.

‘How he plays with long balls, how offensive midfielders and wingbacks assist him, and the caliber of players they have in the center to send the balls between the lines.’

‘This year’s squad is stronger than last year’s, but it will be a struggle. I’m not going to say I’m upset or dissatisfied with our current team.’
