John Lynch has fired back at Joe Montana after the Hall of Fame quarterback and current TV analyst said he would have picked Mac Jones over Trey Lance as his starting QB in San Francisco. Joe Montana: If I had to pick somebody coming out of college, I think they’d be better off picking someone like Trey Lance. Coming from my experience, they’re going to need more than that if you want a chance to win games with this team. John Lynch: We made our decision long before we started talking about it publicly or anything else…

The “Joe Montana draft pick” is a topic that has been in the news recently. Joe Montana, who is currently an NFL analyst for ESPN, said he would take Mac Jones with the first overall pick in the NFL Draft over Trey Lance.

In order to compete in the NFL in 2021, the San Francisco 49ers needed to select a future quarterback. Trey Lance, according to the front office, is the man. However, Niners veteran Joe Montana seemed to disagree. General manager John Lynch reacted angrily to the Hall of Famer’s remarks on the contentious draft-day decision.

For the 49ers, Joe Montana chose Mac Jones over Trey Lance.

The No. 12 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft went to the San Francisco 49ers. Rather of waiting, John Lynch took action. Trey Lance was drafted at No. 3 overall after he moved up nine places.

Lance was the third quarterback selected in the draft, after Jacksonville Jaguars’ Trevor Lawrence and New York Jets’ Zach Wilson. He stood out among the quarterbacks in the class because of his dual-threat skills.

Lance was a member of the FCS powerhouse North Dakota State. In compared to the other top quarterback prospects, he did not have a difficult schedule.

Joe Montana, a former 49ers standout quarterback, recently commented on San Francisco’s choice of Lance. Montana told Yahoo Sports, “If I were the 49ers, I would have picked the guy from Alabama [Mac Jones].” “I don’t have anything against the man they selected [Lance], but Jones is more of a pro-style offensive person who is accustomed to being in tight circumstances.”

Mac Jones was drafted 15th overall by the New England Patriots. Jones was better prepared for the NFL by playing against SEC opposition at Alabama. That isn’t to say Trey Lance was a poor choice for the Niners.

Montana undoubtedly sees himself in Jones, which is why he made those remarks.

Joe Montana has John Lynch’s respect, although he completely disagrees with his point of view. Montana’s recent remarks regarding Trey Lance prompted a response from the 49ers general manager and Hall of Fame safety.

Lynch recently spoke on the Murph and Mac Podcast to address the Niners’ present situation. When questioned about Montana’s Lance remark, the general manager responded with a retort.

Lynch stated, “Well, I’m never going to debate quarterbacking with Joe Montana.” “However, I can tell you something. We have high hopes for Trey Lance and what he will become. “I believe we have seen flashes of it. You know, we’re taking our time. We have another quarterback, Jimmy, in whom we have faith. But it’s also about getting Trey into the greatest circumstances possible.”

Lynch also spoke on how Mac Jones has performed thus far in 2021. “I understand why Joe said that since Mac is playing right now,” he continued, “but we studied that hard.” “We came to a conclusion. We’re still certain that we did the proper option in that situation.”

Trey Lance, according to Lynch, is San Francisco’s quarterback of the future. He responded, “He’s entitled to his own views.” “We’ll always respect that, but we have a lot of faith in Trey Lance and think he’ll be a great player for us for a long time.”

San Francisco will have to see what it has in its rookie quarterback. QB

After a tumultuous offseason, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said that Jimmy Garoppolo will start the regular season in 2021 as the team’s starting quarterback.

Trey Lance, unlike Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson, had to contend for a starting spot. Shanahan, on the other hand, did not believe the youngster was ready.

Niners quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is in his sixth season with the team. While he is still the starter, he has been rather ordinary. The 49ers are now 3-4, so they aren’t out of the woods yet. If they lose a couple more games, Shanahan will have to seriously consider changing quarterbacks.

Lance was selected with significant draft capital by the 49ers. It’s fair to presume he’ll take over the reins in 2021 at some point.

In the game and a half of football he played when Jimmy G was out due to injury, the North Dakota State product looked good. Any rookie quarterback, though, will have a learning curve.

Joe Montana believes Mac Jones would have been a better match. John Lynch, on the other hand, is not convinced. To establish a fair comparison, we’ll need to see more of Trey Lance.

Pro Football Reference provided all stats.

Joe Montana says he wishes the San Francisco 49ers had taken another quarterback in the first round instead of Trey Lance.
